Amazon Echo vs Amazon Echo Dot: What’s the difference?

Amazon is discreetly conquering the field of smart home devices. As Google and Apple busy themselves with creating laptops and smartphones, Amazon is slowly but surely cornering the market of smart home devices with the Alexa-powered Echo and Echo Dot. Amazon’s line of smart speakers are definitely leading the way to the future of automated and home connectivity.

The two speakers essentially do the same functions as the other, but with a few differences. We’ll examine the differences here in our Amazon Echo vs. Amazon Echo Dot comparison.

Amazon Echo

The Amazon Echo is a 9 inch speaker with an all-black finish and a tube-like design. The Echo can play music from Amazon Prime Music, Spotify, and Pandora. You can give it voice commands to play music, turn on the house lights (provided you have a smart LED like the Philips Hue), check the thermostat, and other smart home functions.alexa-smarthome_echo_cg

The Amazon Echo is a smartphone without a screen, with your voice as your only means of inputting commands. Apart from the smart home functions, the Echo can answer questions like “what’s the weather today?” or check the traffic condition for you. The AI is very effective, and somewhat scarily human-like at times.

Amazon Echo Dot

The Amazon Echo Dot, is the diet coke of the Amazon Echo. The device is smaller, but still has a circular design aesthetic. The Dot gets the job done, since it has almost all the functionality of the Amazon Echo, however, it’s small, so it does not make for a good speaker system. You’ll need to put one or more Dot’s to fill a normal sized room. The Dot is only $50, compared to the $179 Amazon Echo. If you need to fill up a big room with Amazon Alexa smart home functionality, then the smaller Amazon Dot is your choice. If you only need to give smart home functionality to a small to medium sized room, one large amazon Echo might fit the job admirably. Third Option: Wait for upgraded Amazon Echo in 2017

If you can’t decide between the two, you might do well to wait for next year. Amazon will release a premium version of the Amazon Echo this coming 2017. The new version of the Amazon Echo is reported to have a 7-inch touchscreen display that will run a rehashed version of Amazon’s proprietary Fire OS. Might be worth the wait.
