NVIDIA has announced the launch of its new SHIELD TV media player which offers gaming, streaming, and AI features. The SHIELD TV features 4K streaming support and HDR playback.

It also supports services like Netflix, Amazon, Google Play Movies, YouTube, and VUDU. Likewise, the player will soon support 360-degree videos through YouTube’s TV app. In addition, the system offers vigorous gaming capabilities and will soon allow streaming games from Ubisoft. Finally, the SHIELD TV features many AI functions.

“NVIDIA’s rich heritage in visual computing and deep learning has enabled us to create this revolutionary device,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, founder and chief executive officer of NVIDIA, who revealed SHIELD during his opening keynote address at CES.

“SHIELD TV is the world’s most advanced streamer. It’s brilliant 4K HDR quality, hallmark NVIDIA gaming performance and broad access to media content will bring families hours of joy. And with SHIELD’s new AI home capability, we can control and interact with content through the magic of artificial intelligence from anywhere in the house,” he said.

Nvidia Shield 2017 Release Date & Specifications

The new SHIELD is smaller and slightly different from the already existing OG model. While the original SHIELD is larger and has metallic looks, the new SHIELD is very lightweight, compact and has a plastic appearance. So, you can now save a lot of space, according to Droidlife. Its console and the updated SHIELD Controller are both smaller.

The SHIELD Controller can still be charged via microUSB whereas the SHIELD Remote can’t be charged the same way. The remote now has a replaceable battery. NVIDIA claims that a fresh battery in the remote can last more than a year.

The updated SHIELD will come with Android 7.0 Nougat and include a new app switching UI. If you already own a NVIDIA SHIELD TV, you do not have to worry about the new features. The company assured that most of the new features will also hit older consoles in the future.

The NVIDIA SHIELD TV is available at $200 for pre-order. In addition, the company will release a SHIELD TV Pro model later this month with remote with a headset jack, controller, and 500GB of storage. The Pro model will be priced at $300.
