Facebook Creator Mark Zuckerberg had posted on his Facebook page he plans on making a global community. Zuckerberg mentioned that Facebook stands for bringing people closer together and building the said global community. He has made Facebook’s opportunities global which includes spreading prosperity and freedom, promoting peace and understanding, lifting people out of poverty, and accelerating science.
Zuckerberg has also added other challenges such as the fight against terrorism, climate change, and the prevention of pandemics. He believes that the company can achieve these things by building the said global community on Facebook. He mentioned that every year, people got more connected with social media and they consider it as a positive trend.
Despite the global connections, globalization left some people behind and was withdrawn from the same. Zuckerberg said that people should reflect on how everyone can have the most positive impact towards one another. He mentioned his favorite saying which says “We always overestimate what we can do in two years, and we underestimate what we can do in ten years.”
Although Zuckerberg’s plans cannot take effect immediately, he believes that he can start working on the long term today. To start off his long-term plans on Facebook, he wants to develop the social infrastructure to give people the power to build the global community that works for everyone. He considers this as the next step after focusing on connecting friends and families in social media.
Mark Zuckerberg: Five Communities
Facebook’s foundation would allow them to focus on the development of the social infrastructure for the global community. Mark Zuckerberg wants to focus on building five communities that would benefit everyone in the global community. The five communities he wants to build include the supportive community, safe community, informed community, civically-engaged community, and inclusive community.
Supportive communities would strengthen traditional institutions in this world where membership have declined. These communities would improve the current physical communities by helping everyone come together, online or offline. This would enable people to form new communities in different transcending locations since distance became a problem in these opportunities.
Safe communities would prevent harm, help people during the crisis, and rebuilds the world where everyone can affect others positively. Meanwhile, informed communities would expose everyone to new ideas and would build common understanding in the world.
Civically-engaged communities would help people participate in important occasions such as voting. Last, inclusive communities would reflect collective values and humanity from local to global levels which would to span cultures, nations, and regions.
