A new entry in Olympus’ PEN Lite line of mirrorless cameras has been announced: enter the Olympus PEN E-PL9, the successor to 2016’s E-PL8. A more updated model of the E-PL8, the E-PL9 offers improvements on its predecessor’s own features.

Fans of a more retro aesthetic need not worry, as the E-PL9 retains the vintage aesthetic that the E-PL8 offered. Not only will the camera come in a classic black, it will also be released in white and brown variations.

This time around, the E-PL9 improves on the E-PL8 with its camera grip. This makes for easier handling when taking shots. The camera also boasts of Olympus’ TruePic VIII processor and a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor. Furthermore, the E-PL9 also retains the three-axis image stabilization feature from the E-PL8. Autofocusing is smoother with the E-PL9, thanks to its upgrade from an 81-point autofocus system to a 121-point autofocus system.

The E-PL9 also caters to the more amateur side of the spectrum with its integrated pop-up flash. With this, users need not attach an external flash unit. The camera also comes with 3-inch tilting touchscreen, giving users easy access to taking selfies. Notably, the E-PL9 is also capable of capturing videos in 4K at 30 fps. Clearly, this camera packs quite the punch in such a compact body.

A new addition to the E-PL9’s features is its Bluetooth capability. In addition to Wi-Fi support, users will now be able to share photos taken with the E-PL9 directly to a smartphone. The feature comes as a convenience, not just for beginners, but for avid social media users as well. The camera’s simplified interface and menu system makes it a breeze to navigate, especially for newcomers who are dipping their feet in the world of cameras.

Seeing as it is a Micro Four Thirds camera, the E-PL9 is also compatible with a variety of Olympus’ Micro Four Thirds lenses. Such a feature offers a range of possibilities on the outcome of photographs with the utilization of different kinds of lenses.

Olympus PEN E-PL9 Price

An official US price and release date has yet to be announced. However, as per reports, the E-PL9 is set to become available sometime in March for Europe, Asia, and other areas worldwide. For the camera body alone, the E-PL9 will reportedly cost €549. On the other hand, for the kit that includes a 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ Pancake lens, the E-PL9 will cost €699.
