Following its recent announcement, the Samsung S9 continues to stir some buzz, especially at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC). Most recently, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S9 as a supplementary device in a PC-style workstation. This is all thanks to its new desktop tool: the Samsung DeX Pad.
What is the Samsung DeX Pad?
Essentially, the DeX Pad is a docking station that allows you to make use of your Samsung S9 as both a keyboard and a trackpad. How does this work? For starters, either a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus is laid flat on the DeX Pad. From there, the phone is tethered via USB-C. Upon attachment, the DeX Pad will then turn the connected smartphone into what is essentially a touchpad PC.
Notably, the DeX Pad can connect to a monitor at 2K resolution, providing users with optimum graphics. Other than a USB-C connector, the DeX Pad also has an HDMI-out connector, two USB-A 2.0 ports, and a USB-C charging port.
What is the Samsung DeX Pad For?
The DeX Pad provides a more fluid working environment from your phone to your desktop computer. With its simple setup, users can work more seamlessly through their phone — and at impressive screen resolutions at that.
It’s worth noting, though, that the DeX Pad is only compatible with a Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. However, reports claim that the device will be able to support older models — such as the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 — later on.
Samsung S9 and S9 Plus
The unveiling of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus at MWC 2018 introduced the pair’s slew of features. One notable attribute that the new phones have is an improved fingerprint reader. In contrast to the S8 and S8 Plus, the fingerprint scanner has now been moved to underneath the camera for easier access on the S9 and S9 Plus. Additionally, both phones make use of Super AMOLED panels with 2960 x 1440 pixel resolutions.
What’s most notable about the S9 line is its dual aperture feature on its cameras. Depending on the situation, the cameras can detect the level of light in your surroundings and will thus adjust its aperture (either at f/1.5 or f/2.4) to better illuminate pictures.
Unlike most high-end phones in the market, the S9 line has retained a headphone jack. Whether or not this is a welcome feature depends on the user. After all, while many smartphones have done away with headphone jacks, some audiences still prefer plugging in their earphones via the more traditional 3.5mm headphone slot.
An official price for the Samsung DeX Pad has yet to be announced. On the other hand, the Galaxy S9 is priced at $719.99, while the Galaxy S9 Plus sits at $839.99. Pre-orders for either phone are now available on Samsung’s website.
